I’m growing purple sweet potatoes. They’re
amazingly colored! Here’s the puree and the sweet potato pie I made from them. It tasted like ambrosia, not sweet potatoes. Very tropical fruit like.I grow several types of Etter apples here in Maine z6a. I focused on the red fleshed varieties. Planted the bench grafts 3-5 years ago. So far only a couple of apples off of my larger Pink Pearl, purchased as a 3-year-old bare root. I am hopeful.
How big was it? Was this your first crop?
I just post a photo on my post above… they were medium size, good size actually biger than baya marisa. Yes it was the first crop…
I’m growing purple sweet potatoes.
I never tried sweet potatoes, I should! What is the cultivar you can grow in Maine! Sounds like what I want!
I have grown regular purple potatoes and they are excellent too. Very tasty!
Yes, I’ve seen your photo.
I thought Baya Marisa is supposed to be bigger than Odysso.
Purple Passion.
No. I got several crops of baya marisa and they are small to medium. They are good, i like them a lot too and they are more red, more acid and smaller than odysso.
Maureen,
Please let me know how Etter apples do for you. I have heard that many are too late to ripen in our zone 6 , esp. Katharine (not red fleshed).
I have Rubaiyat and Pink Parfait. Pink Parfait was excellent even as a first year’s fruit. Rubaiyat in 2019;was awful but last year was a lot better but not as good as Pink Parfait yet.
I have Pink Pearl, Rubaiyat, Christmas Pink, Pink Parfait and a couple of others that made it. Niedwetskyana, too, although not an Etter apple. I actually had 2 Pink Pearls but a microburst shattered one. It had apples on it. So sad. I have to go look and record exactly what’s growing now.
I don’t doubt the trees grow well for us. The concern is if the fruit will ripen in time for us. Both Rubaiyat and Pink Parfait were picked in Nov in my orchard.
I have to re-graft Pink Pearl this year.
Only a handful of apples from the tree that survived. The tree that was blown apart by the microburst had a decent crop on it. But my 2 Pink Pearl trees were only a few years old and @ 5 - 6 ft tall. Still young.
Please pardon my ignorance; what is a microburst?
microburst
https://www.weather.gov/bmx/outreach_microbursts
Dangerous areas of thunderstorms, damage similar to a tornado with little warning.
Wind came up hard in one single spot. (Probably twirling). It didn’t touch the trees to the left or the right that were literally just a few feet away from that one Pink Pearl. Ugh!
(No ignorance assumed by the way.)
Passion
Sorry - I meant to write Purple Profusion. I had Passionflower on my brain. Sometimes lately I mix up my flower, herb or rose names with a fruit tree name.
Thanks for posting I’m going to grow some sweets next year. I love trying new plants. I’m adding a new garden bed next year so I’m going to wait. Everything is taken this year.
For anyone interested, SkiullCult has put his new red fleshed scions up on ebay. one of the auctions is already up to $26, so might be best to hold off until he has more. Auctions run to the 21st.
