Very interesting. We have that kind of damage here, but it is not very heavy.
Harvested last Odysso apple. (Better get it before it’s perfectly ripe than not get it at all.)
Not eating it just yet.
Some Fuji, knotty Braeburn and one May Queen are all I have still on a tree. Picked the last 5 winesaps earlier in the week as they were very rapidly disappearing from the tree.
I’m thinking Odysso looks a lot like a Red Delicious in shape…just saying.
Odysso. Discovered a small rot spot starting at the stem. So—I ATE IT.
Outside been red since pea sized. Inside red from skin/peel to about 1/2 inch deep, then lighter pinks, especially light near blossom end. Seeds dark reddish brown–the fruit was ripe imo.
Some sugars, but the acidic element still put an ‘edge’ on my teeth; not a spitter, but I can’t imagine too many people going back for seconds or thirds. Flesh simi-dry, a little tough, (not like Honeycrisp for certain…but not mealy either).
Apple about 2" diameter. 6 seeds in this specimen.
I think I’ll grow out the seeds … to probably improve the taste, but be interesting to see if
the red pigment is found in 50% of the seedlings.
This is supposed to be REDLOVE’s sweetest apple?
So far, I don’t see this being a special apple…my second year it’s cropped (on M9 I think).
If you have Rubaiyat, you won’t miss the Redlove apples.
Had a pink pearl yesterday. I thought it was great although my family thought it was a bit too tart. Strong berry flavor. Sadly my only one this year. I love the surprise factor for those who have never had an apple with any red flesh. Not my photo. Mine wasn’t quite this pink.
Some of the red fleshed seem to have no Vigor.
I’ve had a Baya Marisa and a Rubaiyat since 2016, and they keep dying.
And I keep grafting more scions. M111 is not hardy in pots after red fleshed apples break dormancy. B-9 has no vigor. I keep tryiing.
Grafted both successfully again this year…maybe some day I get to taste those varieties.
So far, a ripe Niezwetzkyana from the 2021 crop has been my best red fleshed eating experience.
I have numerous young grafts…so in due time there’ll be better ones. I even got a start of Skillcult’s ‘Black Strawberry’ now.
I have several grafts of watermelon. Looks like a high achiever in the pink pearl group.
I grafted all my red fleshed apples on existing trees. Those trees are well established. All grafts took and have grown well.
In fact, I let those red fleshed grafts (all grafted in 2021) set fruit this year. Pink Pearl just dropped one of its two fruit today.
The red flesh varieties that I’ve grafted have done the best on G969. My second year Otterson’s are 11’ tall and feathered out nicely
I got my hands on some Bill’s Red Flesh/Scarlett Surprise at a farmers market a few weeks back. Definitely very tart, just a hint of sweetness but the flavor was great, very strong strawberry note. The red flesh was pretty pronounced and was crunchy and juicy. No mealiness. Sadly, this variety apparently doesnt keep well and when I went back the next week they didnt have them anymore. Wish Id grabbed half a dozen more : / Saved the seeds from all of them to plant next year.
Photo does not belong to me. It’s to show. Got this variety from my friend who made this photo.
Here, Discovry and Discovry rosette.
I grafted Discovry rosette last year.
I grafted both of these a couple of years ago myself, and just sampled the first fruit. Those in your photo are much more highly colored than mine, though this has been an atypical year here weather-wise.
To be honest, however, ‘atypical’ no longer seems to have much useful meaning.
Not sure what this variety is. Needs to hang a bit longer too. But figured I’d take a picture anyway.
mamuang, I’m pretty sure that is an apple
@Fusion_power
Ha,ha, ha apples names can be quite confusing. There are Surprise and Surprize apples
I grow Blush Rosette, and mine are mostly red-skinned.
While I don’t grow Surprise, the few photos/drawings/descriptions of it that I’ve seen match yours pretty well.
I am bad at keeping record. I think I grafted both varieties.
