I tend to believe research efforts at academic institutions are legit in moving the needle (e.g. compatibility, disease resistance, climate adaptation etc.)
My wife got a couple of plumcot varieties from TraderJoes this week, we tried one and it was just bag of bland water held in a super thick skin. Beautiful looking fruit with no sweetness, no tartness, not even bitterness.
This afternoon we were putting away our Santaka pepper and I used the plastic clamshell package plumcot came in, lo and behold its from Family Farms!
And see how much the thing resembles Elephant Heart, including the, damn, I can’t remember what it’s called, but the deformation and probably some hardness below the pit cavity. I used to know the term.
