Yeah, I don’t know anything about your specific situation. So the scenario I described may not apply.
One thing I learned at work is that American culture varies dramatically from place to place. I grew up in southern New England in the shadow of NYC. In my neighborhood, a question was just a question, always OK. But then I worked in another region for a short while and quickly learned that there a question was always considered a veiled accusation. You never know how your innocent inquiry may be interpreted.
If I had to guess, I’m fairly certain the aggressor thought I was someone from overseas. Not that it should have mattered if I was, given that the forum doesn’t limit participation to a certain country. If I recall correctly it wasn’t even an inquiry I had made. I was just participating in a thread I had found to be of interest.
You are welcome. The fig community can be very confusing, even for people very familiar with the community it can be, and in time it does become harder to understand as we forget some of what happened, not that we need to remember, somethings are just better to forget.
I have gotten plant material from Etsy before, not figs, comfrey (bocking14) and was pleased with what I received. That was like 5 years ago. Anyway, as long as you feel comfy with where you are buying, that’s great!
As Ram said figs do deserve their own forum. I’d say there are some good points here and good stories. If you’re all about figs there is no better place to be than Ourfigs. And the big names are all there. The members and hospitality is what got me back online after a decade off. The internet disgusted me for too many reasons but Ourfigs was like a small family of people obsessed with figs.
Of course there will be differences and debates but I always seem to pick stuff up and learn from them.
Right now we lost the person that started it about 10 years ago. Which has been rough because he had a vision of community that seemed pretty unique and legit.
At least this was my perception.
Another thing that can’t be beat, and why many sellers probably frown on it is. People have wish lists under their profile. So around fig dormant time, Christmas time members share hundreds of desirable true to type figs on your wishlists.
I bought from greenstumpCypress and zone9Tropical on Etsy. Along with Brian from profigs and Smatthew in the fig cuttings group. They’ve all been great with communication, especially Brian. He always replies back within minutes, if not seconds
I bought some little trees in pots from a local guy who grows all kinds, they were cheap and he was nice. then I traded stuff for little rooted ones. then some nice people here traded or gave me more.
I over winter mine in the greenhouse! I keep it at 40F+ in there in winter with a really confusing ramshackle setup. as soon as frost is over they get hardened off and go outside the greenhouse for our hot dry summer
I do not get a lot of figs. I feel like I don’t know enough about them to know what to give them and when and how to water them and and and
basically everything. but I love them and get a few from each little tree and it’s a hobby.
I don’t have anything rare or unusual or anything, they’re all tasty in different ways though
I am registered at Ourfigs and I visit from time to time when looking for information (usually when it pops up on an internet search), but I have never posted. This is the only forum that I have really been active on since 2019. Maybe I will try to read more over there… might even try posting a time or two.
@FarmGirl-Z6A That’s good you can see the photos and use the search function then. Lots of people growing figs in cold regions even below yours. Not a lot in ground though but some people show good tricks they use for it.
@Melon Brian from Profigs has some skin in the game you should have some good stuff from him and true to type. Nothing is worse than growing something you want and it being something else. Stay away from eBay unless you know for sure who they are.
Him and I did not get along, so I never joined ourfigs. I don’t think that I should go in to any details about that. The past is the past, and the last thing that the fig community needs is people bellyaching about the past.
He had health issues. But if I was to guess it would be yes and apparently he’s no longer going to be around. And hasn’t been back since he announced the changes.
Quite ambitious list. I’d do more homework on what others are growing around you. Like the Panache probably isn’t very popular too far North of me.Great fig loved by many for centuries I just recently got rid of my tree that was loaded. Black Madeira and Cravens are the same fig. CC has been mentioned to grow a little fast and better but idk I just have a BMKK and BM USDA. But yeah I’d do whatever it takes to grow one even if I was in Alaska lol. It’s that good.
You also have some too similar, some later figs and synonymous figs. What’s your zone?
