Fig Talk

Anyone know what kind of figs have a coconut flavor? One of my trees fruit taste like coconut even when it’s not ripe. I have only had one fully ripe because of the birds, but I have tried a couple of the soft but not fully ripe and it still tasted like coconut. I thought it was a mission fig but I have never had any that tasted like that before so I’m not sure what kind it is now.

Apparently Izbat an Naj can taste like coconut under some circumstances.

Interesting, they have the coconut flavor when they soften up, before they even start to get sweet. I will have to look into these varieties more. Thanks for sharing this info with us.

The flavor of syrup made from fig leaves is also supposed to taste like coconut.

My figs grown in 15 gallon pots have roots coming out of the holes and fixing the pot to the ground. I would like to move the pots. Is this a sign I need to up-pot them or plant in ground if possible? Can I just trim off the extending roots and move them to where I want to put them?

You could uppot but at 15 gals if you want to keep in a pot id just root prune, meaning take them out of the pots and prune back about a 3rd of the roots You can plant in the ground if you wish but i prefer to do that in the spring here

Thanks @snarfing. They’ve only been in the pot a year. Is root pruning a yearly task?

Usually not. They might just have escaped for more water. In which case just trim them where they went in ground and prune them roughly every 2-3 years.

I had this happen too. I just yanked them out and cut the roots flush to the bottom of the pot. So far, so good. :crossed_fingers:

I made some syrup from fig leaves and the simple syrup actually tastes like coconut. I kinda caught me off guard
