From fig cuttings that I took on January 15th, the day before a 7 day cold snap that we experienced, I have 2 cuttings which are inexplicably showing fruitlets.
The way it’s growing; tomorrow the Kaido Crab cuttings will have fruit on them…lol…They are really an amazing grower. They will not be breedable being hybrid; but I’m glad they erred and sent them. I think they can make great rootstock.
Moved the hot box to the window and cat proofed it. Hopefully the cuttings will like it.
Why?
From what I read it does not breed true. Malus baccata x Malus spectabilis
I’d be happy to learn otherwise. It is listed as a diploid
It is PI589754.

So they are breedable, but sexual self-propagation might not be true to hybrid. For that, two different yet pollen-compatible F1s is necessary.
Professional breeders might purposely avoid that, focusing instead on repeated backcrossing with cultivars of the two species until the desired level of interspecificity is reached.
Partly the reason I cancelled that order. But still; I think they will be worth grafting out, Grown out and given a shot in a stool bed.
