I would have loved to read that book. Maybe it is in French? I love my espaliers. My trees are doing very well. I was hoping to apples this year worth eating. I am not sure. Thank you for the book.

afraid not. It’s becoming a bit of a “lost art” i was amazed there was even such a book on the subject. i don’t think the market for it is large enough to justify the costs of translation etc.
The title “The cultivation of espalier fruit trees” is one i will look for. @mrsg47 sometimes i read them in a different language if i can find an electronic version. If we could get an ebook we can run it through a translator to convert to english.

Leifruitbomen zijn bijzonder geschikt voor kleine tuinen, ter verfraaiing van muren, gevels en schuttingen en wie het lukt om een kunstvorm op te kweken mag zich met recht de trotse eigenaar noemen van een boomvorm die maar zeer zelden in een tuin wordt aangetroffen.
Als u in enige mate beschikt over groene vingers en de kennis uit dit boek goed toepast, kunt u mooie leifruitbomen opkweken en onderhouden, die een sieraad zijn in uw tuin.
In 2011 heeft Stichting In Arcadië de heruitgave van de eerste druk uit 1997 verzorgd. Februari 2021 is de derde druk van het boek uitgekomen.

Haha, that is great, Oscar, I have the same book! It is a national treasure on the finer points of understanding growth and pruning in the Dutch language.
There is also a great book on the history of espaliers and pruning in French. @mrsg47 , if you read French than this is the book on pruning espaliers:
It is written by the head gardener of the castle of Versailles. That is the place where espaliers and all different knowledge on pruning small and productive high quality fruits was first studied and described by Jean-Baptiste de La Quintinie, the head gardener of Louis XIV himself. The gardens are still there in Versailles and if you ever get the chance to visit them, don’t miss it! Most people just go to see the castle, but the orchards are just as impressive.
In this book the entire knowledge and philosophy of creating, designing and pruning espaliers is explained in a very clear way with many beautiful examples of designs and practices that date from the last 4 centuries.

Also, I did visit not only the gardens of Versailles but took a donkey cart ride through the potagers of the King. The espaliers and cordons were incredible but the miniature orchard was my favorite. My visit was in September and on that day they had an apple tasting from the orchards of the King. It was the first time I tasted Calville Blanc d’Hiver and thought it was the best tasting apple ever!

I visited garden of Versailles in July some years back. There was music performance at night. It is a well designed, well maintained, grand garden. The music even sounded more beautiful in that surrounding

That sounds fantastic! It is a magical spot. I studied in Paris and we went to Versailles quite a few times. I always preferred to hang out in the gardens, pots her and orchard.
I love to read about the knowledge and understanding one needs to create and maintain these artificially shaped trees. At first it all sounds very confusing and complicated, but when it all comes together it becomes simple again, like a philosophy or deeper understanding of how all things grow, naturally.

I was wondering what the French transplant could be… for me it has nothing to do with French.
Yesterday, to save time, I made a wreath of Asian pears with nails. I don’t know if this is practiced by you. But with the strong growth it avoids the detachment of the scionwood. I often practice like this on big subjects. first pear in 2 years normally.
