I would suggest a Montmorency sour cherry. It produces a ton of fruit in just a few years, it’s self pollinating, and in most places- unlike a sweet cherry- you never need to spray and splitting isn’t a huge worry.
Kids LOVE sour cherries. My boys practically fought over them the first few years. Most adults love them too, I’ve never had anyone spit one out… And the pies!!! Only downside for me is needing to cover it at harvest with a net. It’s well worth it for me.
Wow all I had to do was mention tyty and the responses flow in haha! Thanks for the additional info. What they sent me looks like a crab as far as I can tell…not far. Reddish bark and when I knicked it with a shovel during planting it was green inside.
So I’m clear, even with brand new bareroot plants, deep watering once/week is best?
I think we mentioned it because TyTy has been one of the worst nurseries as far as we have read and , for some, experienced here. Also, there are many new members here. It is good for them to know, too.
We hope your crab apple is Dolgo. It would be a waste of time and money to find out 3-4 years from now that that crab is crap.
Thanks mamuang, no worries from me. I’ll see how this goes for now and see what I get. Agree with letting others know if a nursery is reliably unreliable.
That being said…has anyone heard of ANY positive stories from tyty? Or is it almost a guarantee that I have a phony tree? And I wonder what the blackberries will turn out to be?
