Fuzzy kiwi in colder climates

Does saanichton suffer a lot of winter die back?

I’m wondering if I missed something on this kiwi. Isons sent me one that was dead all the way down to a few inches at the roots. Then, they sent me a replacement that looks like this (I can’t find first round pictures). Their explanation was that sometimes they suffer die back.

This one has about 6”’of life as I cut it back (below what is pictured). Hopefully one of them lives, but I wonder if I need to be concerned they’re going to die in Maryland.

Some years they do get some die back, but on a small plant like that it’s not good. The one you have may make it if it still has some green buds, but all the ones I’ve had with that much damage just went down in flames. You just have to get them to survive a couple years. After that they can mostly handle whatever happens.

Well, thanks for the honest assessment. I’m not hopeful, and rather perturbed they sent me a second nearly dead one! Ive added yet another one to a restoring Eden order…hopefully they send more alive plants than Isons!!

Restoring Edens are potted. You should have much better luck with those. I ordered six fuzzy kiwi from Isons couple years back (much bigger and better than what you got) and all of them died. I don’t think fuzzy kiwi are to fond of being bare root. I went straight potted after that.

I remember your warning, too bad I didn’t heed it. Though the isons kiwi I got aren’t actually barerooted just un-potted. They actually had a pot-shaped and soil-filled root mass. Who knows what they are doing to their kiwis! I’m glad restoring Eden might work better.

I have to share this picture because I’m so happy- after my abysmal experience receiving 2 blatantly dead saanichtons from Isons and a male that I think is also dead, I got this BEAUTY from Troy at Restoring Eden.

That does look nice. I knew you would have better luck with them. Park seed has some nice potted ones also, but they sell them in male/female sets.

Scott have a question for you. I made those gold grafts and the buds on the grafts had expanded almost to the point of leaves. Then that night freeze hit and fried everything on the plants. The main plants are recovering, but the grafts are not doing anything. There are not any buds left that did not attempt to sprout, but the sticks still scratch green. What’s your guess on the outcome.

There are usually a couple dormant backup buds on each side of a big bud so one of them might sprout. Probably not super likely though based on similar things I have seen.

I think I ended up accidentally getting lucky this spring in that I chip budded all my early kiwi grafts. Since they were not dominant they didn’t swell much so the freeze didn’t damage them. Just now I am cutting off the tops to force them, one already started on its own after all the growth died in the freeze and I am hoping most of them will get going now.

I am just now starting to see the kiwis get going again, several plants got almost totally fried but they all have some tiny new growths now.

One of the Sorelli sticks was way to big for what I was grafting onto so I tried to root it. Unexpectedly it has about 2-4 inches of growth in two locations. Probably running on scion power, but would be nice if it actually rooted.

I lost about 80% of my fuzzy growth. They are all coming back now though. One of the smaller newer ones is having a little bit of a rough time, but looks like it should make it.

Anyone have an extra Fuzzy green male rooted cutting/plant? Of the 3 mostly dead vines Isons sent, I had the highest hopes for the male coming back to life. But, the little that was scratching green is progressively going to brown. Same with the second saanichton. The first 100% died much faster. Crazy they sent 3 dead vines. I need a male.

You can always graft some male on later. I’d just go back to Eden and get it. Bigger is better when it comes to fuzzy and potted. I paid a lot of money to learn that. 6 dead bare roots from Isons and 4 dead rooted plugs from Fruitwood. But all the big potted ones are doing great.

Thanks, again. I should have just had them send me a male too as insurance. I can’t stomach a third RE shipment/cost in a row- they forgot to add the saanichton to my citrus order and shipped it separately the following week. It might have to wait until next year, or maybe I’ll make it work in June.

They also have some rooted cuttings plugs.

This was the arctic kiwi I received from them as rooted cuttings

Glad your plugs look healthy. I’ll be sticking with RE if no one has a spare. Too scared to lose more money. Hopefully I get isons to refund the dead male. We desperately need a OGW/RE/Whitmans-like nursery on the east coast!

Edible Landscaping in VA. They have fuzzy and they carry sizes ranging from plugs to 3 gallon. Right now some of the sizes are out of stock for different ones though. I like EL and all their stuff is potted.

Has anyone bought from Etsy seller WMhappyhome that has a variety of grafted yellow fuzzy kiwis? They offer “golden sun” “golden kiwi fruit” and “eastred” grafted plants.

You had me interested too, but I think I’ll pass on that one. Their price is not in dollars. The review photos show the plant tags written in asian. On ebay the sellers from china will use fake US addresses for their accounts and IF they ship it comes from china. This looks like something similar. Let me know if you find out different.

I’m not ordering, looks too suspicious. Was just wondering if anyone knew anything about them or these varieties.
