Now I’m starting to question whether a (plum x apricot) x plum will produce a hybrid that has 75% plum and 25% apricot genes in its parentage, or could it inherit a plum ratio greater than 75%?
Could this be the reason that there’s no apricot taste in some pluots that have: plum x ( apricot x plum) in their parentage?
I think you are correct when you attempt to get a 1/4 to 3/4 ratio. The genes have more options as to which is passed on. Seems like this would be a more likely way to get heavier input from the apricot (plum x apricot) x apricot).
You only have so many alleles. You can’t change the laws of physics and chemistry. The fact plum has a strong phenotype doesn’t mean apricot is not there.
Unless really what you have is just a plum.
Yes that is possible. The pollen uses 50% of the DNA, it could be any combination. The 2nd cross, no way to tell if the genes between plum and apricot divided equally, probably not!
Brad, the breeders of True Gold peach stated their goal for breeding a peach which comes true from seed was to provide a peach which can be replicated without grafting. Replication without grafting of course takes out a very labor intensive step.
However I don’t know that its really caught on. I’ve only seen it for sale at Gurneys /Henry Fields.
Interesting @Olpea, thanks. I could see that being a positive in some sense. Although I’ve seen videos of the pros T-budding and it’s amazing how quick they are. Seems like less than 5 sec per bud. I wonder how the cost of that would compare to the cost and time of growing out the seedlings to stabilize it.
I initially thought about plant patent issues as well but they have a PVP, which I hadn’t heard about before. This protects seeds and tubers so it looks like they’re protected, at least from commercial reproduction.
Pros are fast. I once read a team of 2 can field bud 1000 trees per day. Perhaps the bigger deal is the seedling doesn’t have to be headed back to a bud (like with budded trees) which would produce bigger nursery trees earlier.
You’re right, unfortunately, this variety can’t be propagated even from seed, without a license agreement, which I guess would make sense for the developers to pursue that type of protection, since it comes true from seed.
