Giant Hornets Reported in PNW

Blueberry, do you know if Japanese bees, originated in eastern Europe, or are they a separate species which originated in Japan?

Not an expert, just know enough to be dangerous…lol.

The ‘Asian’ bee (apis cerana) dwells in cliffs and stuff in places like Thailand, Cambodia, VietNam……and I would suppose the ones in Japan are the same, but I do not in fact know.

I am not an expert either, but japanese honeybees are not a separate species from asian honeybees. Just a subspecies( analogous to cultivar-- in the fruit world).
Asian honeybees are supposedly better pollinators than mellifera, since the majority of fruit crops in usa are of asian origin. From citrus to peaches and apples to jujubes, the asian honeybee co-evolved with those pollen sources.
Melliferas rarely visit juju blossoms. Ceranas are the natural pollinators

At least some good news.

Hopefully there aren’t another 100 nests.

We have them here… they are very nasty!

The initial sighting of the killer hornets was near the Canadian border. That’s over 100 miles away from me.
Hopefully WSDA will be able to eradicate the small numbers there.

I have to hope that was their only nest. I wonder how often they breed.
