Grafters: Do not go to this page

Uygi, are you referring to budded trees under one inch caliper? Or, are you budding into larger trees … hence the concerns?

This was nursery stock from Cummins, probably on g.11 or g.41. They were, and still are, all under an inch caliper. I feel like it’ll be a long time before that 90 degree angle bud has any capability of bearing any weight safely. Lucky for me these are dwarf stocks grown high density on a trellis, so there’s no weight on the union. Needless to say, I make my own grafts arrow-straight and I feel better.

Agreed, the Cummins trees give new meaning to the term ‘crooks’.
But, breaking at the crook isn’t likely.

When I was looking for scion wood for apples I just checked around my area and found someone in mid N. Carolina that was willing to let me take their cuttings when they pruned their trees. Worked out great!
