I had this problem chip budding and bud-grafting Japan Maples to box elder. Even several wraps of the typical vynyl budding tape were not strong enough, and the chip buds were all push off of the unions by lots of quick growing callous, despite treating my box-elder rootstocks terribly.
I’m not certain about long term compatibility and definitely about Box Elder suckers taking them over, but they are certainly short-term graft-compatible. If you want to follow my experiment, it is going well, other than the human-pest factor.
