at what thickness are we waiting for to graft seedlings? i have a few that are thicker than a pencil. also, does anyone have scion? id really like marias black and something else that would be suited for container growth that will be brought in for the winter and have to be pruned for size. not sure when people usually take scion for these or mangoes.
also, does anyone know where they are getting these type of seedling bags and the dimensions of them? looks like 3x10 when full of soil.
You can graft seedlings whenever you have enough shoot length to work with. The soft young tissue of seedlings calluses really fast. You don’t even need to really match up the cambium layers, so mismatched scion/rootstock thicknesses are okay to a point. Just keep them indoors in a warm, dimly lit place with a plastic baggie on top while they heal.
I think most people take budwood in late winter, but any new growth that’s fully hardened off probably works too.

just found this process that a nursery in ca is doing to get clonal rootstock. interstem to the extreme. wonder if they tried rooting new growth of the rootstock they want: Rooting avocado cuttings
