how do you guys get anything to break down out there? its so dry. i have plenty of moisture here but not enough heat to keep the compost process going. by time the ground gets above 50f its mid june and 1st frosts start late sept. so basically only 3 months of active composting here.

The kitchen scraps we add have a lot of moisture. I’m usually adding dry leaves, cardboard or paper for extra carbon. I also rinse out the hen water bowls into the compost in the summer, and everything then is in shade or everything dies! Chicken or horse manure would help yours heat up, or just give up on compost and bury the scraps directly into the ground when you’re able. Keep them in the freezer until your ground thaws.
