We don’t usually get deer. Saw one once in the 18 years I’ve been here and it looked pretty lost!

Great! Use hardware cloth to protect the bark against rabbits.

I think it was a rabbit that was eating my little peach tree over the winter. Luckily it didn’t get all the way around. I probably do need to set up some hardware cloth.
Based on my recent bad experience, I’d advise making it high enough to cover the tree after a big snowstorm.
