Only my opinion. With proper care I think my rabbit eyes will outlast my grands.
If you never fertilized them, then that is likely the problem. Get some Hollytone and spread 2-3 handfuls around the base of each remaining bush and water it in. You should see a burst of new growth in a couple of weeks.
I don’t think their roots don’t grow quickly enough to do this. I feel like this would only apply to plants with roots that grow very quickly when needed like figs, maple, tomato/all nightshade plants, or willow trees for example. Also their roots are very shallow in comparison to trees/bushes in general. They don’t typically extend more than 4-5ft in any direction away from the edges of the plant and if you have a tree style blueberry, then your root system is even more shallow.
When i had my blueberries in ground, you could pluck them at any moments notice by hand and replant them. Those were about 5 years old. The roots were only about a foot out from the center and almost 2ft downward.
Also their shallow root system is why they do amazing in large pots as well
