How much space do raspberries and blackberries really need?

This is helpful information, thank you! The fence is well within our yard, so I’m not worried about the canes spreading into our neighbor’s land. I don’t think they’d care anyway, since it’s all pasture land, and blackberries grow wild here.

I do think I need raised beds for the raspberries, since the canes I planted this last spring have almost all died, and I think it was the constant rains on our clay soil that did them in. Otherwise, it may have been the woodchip mulch, since we have a lot of walnuts growing wild, and the mulch is free from our electric company. I’ve debated on posting a question on that, but I don’t think there’s enough juglone to kill them.

I make borderless raised beds… add lots of compost, cover them well in woodchips.
