How to graft goumi?

@JohannsGarden JohannsGarden I noticedthat also. Will be interesting to see once the Wang Bo is in ground.

I want to cross Wang bo and Carmine an grow a bunch of seeds in pots to evaluate for any winners. How do you cross them?

I just let my goumi open pollinate. I haven’t tried any hand pollinating yet, though I do intend to try in the future since I want to attempt a wide cross between goumi and silverberry. I just need to get them both blooming at the same time.

Has anyone tried grafting Goumi onto Ebbengii? I have Goumi scions in the fridge and plan to graft them onto my Ebbengii, but it hasn’t put on any new growth yet. It should be interesting to see the effect of grafting Goumi onto an evergreen.

Red Gem, Sweet Scarlet, Rain tree, and Forest grafts onto a Tillamook/Carmine. Probably doesn’t need cross pollination but they are so easy to add.

Nice! when did you do the grafts? were the trees dormant or having little leaves?

Two of the 4 grafts were added in 20260315. The other 2 were about 2 weeks earlier. I don’t have a date for the older graft. The scions were dormant but the tree was starting to leaf out.

Here’s my first grafting attempt! 5 scions of Forest Farm goumi on a feral autumn olive. The first 3 were whip and tongue, but I got frustrated doing them with the thin diameter, so I switched to cleft for the last 2, and they turned out much better. I will be protecting this plant from the deer!

It looks like some of those scions might be second year wood instead of first year wood. I’ll be curious to see if that has any affect on take rate (positive or negative).
