I grew 3 pots of hybrid persimmon seeds about a month ago. So far only the 15 seeds of Kassandra x open from Cliff England grew well. The other two pots didn’t germinate. I will give them a little more time and will dig some seeds up to investigate why it didn’t grow. The other 2 were Taishu x chocolate male and JT-02 x possible Taishu and Chocolate male.

Here’s a hybrid I’m excited about. It’s a mix of Honan Red, Nikita’s Gift, and a male offspring of Rosseyanka. First year fruiting. I’m hoping the star shape continues to be pronounced as it matures.

There are advocates for often burying the graft union for select trees (see lengthy post here):
As explained, the decision seems to depend almost entirely on whether the rootstock is (1) standard / seedling [bury], or (2) dwarfing [do not bury].
For apples and pears, which are almost always sold on rootstock that affects size, the general recommendation is to plant the graft union a couple inches above the ground. The goal is to avoid scion rooting.
For standard / seedling rootstock, it doesn’t matter if the scion roots.
The paper cautions against planting the union too deep for fear of suffocating the roots and/or pushing the roots into poor subsoil.
Wow! It has fivefold symmetry, like pomes, instead of the usual fourfold symmetry of persimmons.
That seems like a fundamental change.
I haven’t grown persimmons for a while. Are fivefold fruits an occasional variant?

Me too. It set and dropped fruit two years ago. I feel like it should hold some of its fruits this year, but who knows with persimmons.
