I am debating whether to use a mix of screened topsoil and potting soil or just potting soil for a few trees I want to plant on a 12ā mound. If I use just the potting soil, will the feeder roots get exposed once the potting soil is gone and need to be topped every year to keep the tree on the mound.

no. not if you keep it mulched. i used a decent quality potting soil with some added perlite. make sure it doesnt have chemical fertilizers. only organic. as chemical can burn the roots. as the years go by the mound will disappear.
