Sounds like a plan. I did go back and do some lateral pruning to 3rd or 4th leaf with some left longer.

It worked well for me last year and really increased the number of fruiting buds. I have about 3x the number of apples this year compared to last. At least that’s before the birds got at them.

I did get a lot of late blooms and new growth that persisted right up until the first cold weather last year. I started a little earlier this year in hopes they would settle down a bit.

I’m happy to report the summer pruning (and branch bending) on my apple trees made them all produce buds last fall which are flowering now in the following spring. Trees are on 3rd/4th leaf now. We may be getting a variety of small harvests on those apple trees for the first time.
