I have a Jenny kiwi in N.S. that I’m planning to prune next week. I can send you some cuttings if you’re still looking for them.
I’m in central Pennsylvania, somewhat in the northwest. My daughter brought me two Jenny kiwi a couple of years ago and I really did not believe they would survive. They fruited for the first time last year after about 3 or 4 years in the ground. I did protect with some straw over the winters. The fruit last year was like ampersand showed, way smaller than store bought. It was really dry here last year. I actually watered them a number of times even though they were well established. They didn’t seem to be getting soft and I was worried about a frost so I picked them (there were about 30) and left them in a brown paper bag and they softened up. The flavor was good. This year they are loaded with blossoms. I am hopeful that they will be larger than last year as we’ve had so much rain this year. They grow very quickly and seem to be thriving.
I never ended up getting Jenny. I’ve had Saanichton for several years now and I just got Blake this year. Hardly anyone carries Jenny and they are always sold out or I would try it out myself.
Not sure the best time to root fuzzy kiwi, but it grows at an insane rate (faster than hardy kiwi!) so I can take a stab at rooting for you.
Grafting it onto one of my male branches would be easier. I picked up several Blakes and with the Saanichtons I already had I’m pretty strapped with fuzzy kiwi now. Blake is early ripening and I don’t need it, but self pollinating.
Question- if Jenny is a fruiting male, can you graft female fuzzy to it and they pollinate?
Jenny is a semi self fruitful female and it will not pollinate another female. Pretty sure that is right, but someone will correct me if I’m wrong.
@kiwinut has labeled it a fruiting male in another thread, which is what prompted that thought/question.
If you do a google search it’s listed as female. But as we all know the internet is not exactly the absolute truth on every subject.
