My fellow Texans, the jujube trees are just starting to awaken here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
So naturally I’m mentally preparing for grafting season. Thus far my only experience with grafting has been doing bark grafts of persimmon, but I will try to do cleft this time. Although, the scions of the jujube are a little different. I don’t see buds as I would with persimmon scions, so I wonder where I’m supposed to cut them at.

Here is a picture of the jujube “bud” or “node”. They do present a bit differently.
You should make your cuts as indicated here so that you give yourself a lot of length to make your graft cuts.
This piece of scion offers three nodes that can be used for grafting. I rarely use more than one node per graft.
Note that the jujube wood even harder than persimmon.

Not great photo but a quick find to show you pic of a jujube graft.

Thanks K8tpayaso for illustrating where the bud/node is and where to cut.
You’re the best!!
Goat tit still makes me giggle.

I chickened out and did a bark graft instead of a cleft graft.
I still have more, so I’ll try to experiment with a cleft graft later.
All of my jujube are awake and my bare root Sandia is coming alive too.

Looks like you’re good to grow there! That center, darker stalk growing is an upright primary stem that will make another branch of your tree. Yea!!!

Thanks!
I saw that central stock the other day and was hopeful. Your confirmation makes me so happy!
This is my R4T3 scion I got from England Nursery, which is now grafted on my Shanxi Li.
I was also supposed to get a Sihong scion from England Nursery, but I never received it. I don’t know what happened there. Maybe my order just slipped through the cracks. I did place that order on a different day than my previous order which is the R4T3 seen grafted in this picture and my 100-46 persimmon scion. Those came together, but the Sihong is probably not coming I assume.
Oh well.

Good afternoon everyone,
I am a new jujube grower. I ordered bare-root jujube trees online. I potted them in 15 and 25 gallons pots. They are growing well now and some trees also started having some fruits.
I have a question about potted trees:
Do I have to cover them or bring them in the garage during winter months (zone 7B)? (If I do need to cover them, what is the best cover type/brand to use?)
I have 4 jujube trees in the ground and they are fine without any winter protection; however I worry about the ones in the pots since it is quite cold in Northern Virginia (zone 7B) during winter (the temperature may get down to single digit, around 8 degree F).
Thank you so much in advance.
Best wishes to all.
Celeste.
I live in Fairfax and have kept several jujube in pots over winter. I just move the 3 gallons pot into the corner of my yard out of the wind and they come through the winter just fine.

I’d suggest bringing the potted jujubes to the south side of your house, and place them right next to it.
