That looks great. Those look like very tiny pots- do you have trouble keeping them watered? And how long before transplanting into bigger? I’m guessing you don’t want to waste big pots on seeds that don’t germinate. Maybe germinate them on a paper towel, then plant in a bigger pot?
Hopefully you don’t get any big gusts of wind…
I’m still grafting quite a bit, but the end is in sight. I’m mostly done at home and some of the rentals, with 3 sites mostly remaining. I was grafting at one of them today (after swapping out a fridge which was having problems) and really cut back a Li hard. Some of my bark grafts were on 1.5" wide shoots…
That Li already had 5 varieties on it, and I added 6 more
Oh those tables would be in my neighbors yard here haha. I do commend the organization skills, I need to obtain some of those with my seed plantings for sure.
They are in seed trays that are the 50/tray size and yes they have to be watered daily. It’s not terribly hot here yet this year so daily is okay so far. Once they come up I try to get them transplanted into larger pots. The good growers will go into gallon pots and this year the runts are going to be tossed. I’ve found over the years that the ones that don’t grow well never do.
I have to watch that here too. The trays are a lot heavier than you would think but I also have cement blocks that I put on the tables and I have used netting to tie them down sometimes. And if there is threat of hail they are moved to a nearly shed. I try to give them as much sun as I can.
It is a lot of work but I enjoy it. I’m beginning to get fruit from some of the older ones that is very varied and possibly a new cultivar in progress. Lots of the others are used as and sold for rootstock.
In the shed tonight with a tornado watch until 10:00pm! and yes, if the shed is blown away so goes the seeds but if it hails only then they will be protected.
Does anyone grow this new Sweet Frost jujube variety from China? I saw a nursery selling it and sounds very appetizing of a crunchiness of Honey Jar and sweet tasting of Sugarcane. The best of two worlds.
The name is a bit like the translation of Bing Tang. I’ve seen translations of “Icy Sugar” and “Rock Sugar” for it, the first of which is close to Sweet Frost. The shape in the picture doesn’t match, but who knows if they have the right picture up.
There are a couple other cold/winter related jujubes that they don’t look entirely unlike, Snow and Dali Winter. But I haven’t harvested either myself to know much about them.
i saw reviews about trees and shrubs regarding their shipping wrong variety over on the mulberry forum on fb. And, it wasn’t just one customer. i would be cautious about that nursery stock.
Is it ok to plant Jujube tree close to house or near drive way, are the roots invasive? I have 2 spots in front yard that are west facing and gets a lot of sun.
