Jujubes- Our New Adventure

I think it looks fine

Is there something wrong with this honey jar jujube tree? After it woke up from dormancy, all the leaves are folded? I have checked the moisture content on the ground. It looks alright.

That is normal for Honey Jar. It will be fine.

You don’t think this is the trunk rotting?

I just grafted Autumn Beauty to the GA866 I got from One Green World. This was my first time grafting jujube. Man, they are wicked. I should have de-thorned the area before beginning.

Maybe a little but as long as you keep your mulch away from the trunk it should be fine

One thing you can also try is scraping of a small amount of bark to see if underneath is still green

I might just be paranoid because it’s my first time with trees…

Tony, I had a lot of trouble getting my loofa seeds to germinate this spring. In the past my wife had bought small starts from Chinese grocery stores. I did a bit of reading online and found that sometimes people scuff or cut the seeds and soak them.

I did an experiment where I soaked them for two or three days after:

  • Nothing, as a control
  • Scuffing with sandpaper
  • Small cuts with knife

Then, after a few days of soaking, I planted the seeds in large pots. I had so many control that I had 2 pots of them. 1 in a 75-80F room and one outside. The rest were placed outside.

11 days later and only the ones that were cut/scored are germinating. Exactly 0 of the control (inside or outside) and scuffed ones have germinated. 6 of the 18 cut/scored ones have and I expect there could be more, given how those first 6 appear to have just come out.

Cut/scored seed:

Of the 3 groups, I actually cut the fewest, 18, while there were 32 scuffed ones and over 60 controls. This reflects that it was the most work to cut them, but it certainly seems to have helped the process along.

Off topic, but I wanted to make sure you knew, as you could be in the same boat based on your post last fall.

I soaked them in paper towels on the kitchen counter for 2 days and planted the loofa seeds. 11 out of 20 seeds germinate after 2 weeks. I may try your way next year.

Wow Tony, you got much better results than me. In February and March, I planted a couple dozen of them, and only have two that eventually germinated. Those two are now planted outside and have a real head start on this new batch.

I’ve transplanted the new ones into gallon pots. It’s good that I got to them so quickly, as the roots were already getting pretty long.

I think my green house heat also helps them germinated faster. The Chinese snake gourd is like 70% germinated.

Sorry I dont have a picture but I just planted, earlier this spring, two Jujubes (honey jar and sugar cane) from Burnt Ridge Nursery and they are starting to wake up. The trees were each about 3-4’ tall but everything appears to be dead except for shoots coming out in the bottom 8" of the tree (above the graft thankfully). So, I am wondering if Jujubes can grow as a multi-stemmed shrub-type form or should I re-train it to a central leader type?

If it were mine I would let it grow for a bit and see what you have. If there are a lot of branchlets growing I might cut them back to a couple and choose the best one later to replace your main trunk. I do have several in my orchard that are growing bush like but I can say I’m the best at pruning everything off. You can train it how you want.

It’s very hot (well, that’s relative to a lot of things but I’m complaining anyway) and very humid here and often there is no breeze stirring. However those conditions make it so pleasurable to walk through my orchard because with the jujube in full bloom there is such a wonderful fragrance in the air. Okay I really never cared that much for grape koolaid but it sure smells nice coming from my trees!

Anyone kept jujube in pots? I’m a bit concerned about the roots/suckering.

What is your concern? You can mow around it and that takes care of it

I’ve just read it’s a bit of a pain, and i have citrus about 10 ft away - didn’t want it to be overly competitive for them.

It’s interesting how fragrances are interpreted in the brain from one person to the next. You say it smells like grape koolaid, and some have said it smells like bubblegum. To me jujube flowers smell like an oriental perfume. It takes me back to Epcot in Orlando Florida as a child. I guess someone must have worn a floral fragrance back then that smelled similar to jujube flowers, at least to how my brain interprets it.

Anyway, what is even more weird is when I read some people think it smells like dirty socks. I just think to myself, ā€œwhat in the worldā€?

That’s yuck…… I do love the smell!

It’s so strange how smells can initiate such a strong memory response. I have had that happen and usually it’s such a pleasant experience. Do we just file the bad smells differently so we don’t have to remember? Oh wait…… there’s that dirty sock thingy!
