Yeah, but it isn’t frost but freezing temps that threaten trees. Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t think keeping frost off trees is helpful if the temps are the same either way.

In fact, wrapping a tree around the trunk may be blocking the only source or warmth that can protect it- that from the ground.

Keeping the frost off the tender growth certainly helps. But you’re not wrong in the fact that of course trees produce no heat so it doesn’t raise the temperature. But keeping the frost off is generally enough (within a reasonably low temperature range) to protect buds
