Lingonberry growers - how are they doing?

I’ve sourced from Fedco, One Green World, and Hartmann’s. Same results across the board.

I read more about Lingonberries on wikipedia

Few take-away which explains why my plant is doing so poorly.

  • “Commercial cultivation is undertaken in the U.S. Pacific Northwest and in the Netherlands”
    • “grows poorly where summers are hot” – Most of eastern US has more intensive summer heat than Netherlands (which usually doesn’t get above 75F)
  • “prefers some shade (as from a forest canopy) and constantly moist, acidic soil” - Mine is in full sun
  • “brittle roots” - I accidentally stepped on mine and killed it, oops

I was curious if they hate clay, which is what mine are growing in, with them spreading by stolon and all, but people with them in raised beds presumably aren’t growing in native soil. The two that are still alive have shade in the afternoon this year, so maybe that will help?

Good point, the delicate and brittle roots probably hate heavy clay.


Lingonberry ‘Red Pearl’ flowering now.
I killed my ‘Ida’ last year by letting it dry out completely by accident, so this is my replacement.

I also have the North American lingonberry subspecies as well as the European.

when do you usually get ripe fruit? mine are just finishing ripening now.

This is the first time having flowers. I’ve heard you can have berries ripening into October, weather depending.

I don’t know that this plant will produce fruit in time this year but we’ll have to see.

I planted a bunch under and around my hydrangeas with lowbush blueberries, mostly as an ericaceous groundcover but with fruit as an added bonus.

They don’t seem all that happy, but they’ve given me a few berries this year. Dead ripe, they’re like a cranberry that’s sweet enough to eat raw. If they weren’t useful as a nice looking ground cover, I wouldn’t grow them.
