That’s very upright for Magness, my 3 trees on OHxF333 have tended to be naturally well shaped with less vertical growth. You might benefit from pulling down some of those branches, it will encourage development of fruit buds. However, mine were grafted in 2018 or ‘19 and they have not yet bloomed, Magness can’t be rushed.

Crows are smart I rock them and they don’t come back when they steal pears. If they see me they fly away.
Magness has had half the pears knocked off and it’s still loaded. I appreciate the free thinning. It was not storms it was large delivery trucks.

Any updates from folks growing magness? I don’t see it on updated fireblight resistant threads, so I’m wondering most of all how it fares with FB. @clarkinks any update?

I have Magness and Warren grafted on a double stem tree. They grow side by side. Magness had zero fireblight this year. Warren had half a dozen strikes with limbs dead up to 5 feet long. This is not serious enough to be a problem, but it highlights that even a fireblight tolerant variety will occasionally get damage.
Warren has a few pears growing, maybe 20 total. Magness has none. I grafted both trees from scions provided by LuckyP in 2020. Both are about 18 feet tall and spread maybe a dozen feet between them.

No problems at all in my area with Warren or Magness. Magness is slightly less fb resistant than Warren. They are both great trees.

Hopefully those Warrens I grafted this year don’t take that long. I’ve been waiting forever for Magness to start fruiting. Magness also doesn’t seem to grow as aggressive as most other varieties.
Have never had blight on Magness that I recall.
I have a Magness tree that I grafted in 2001…I think it’s on OHxF513. It has never made a fruit. Ever.
So…I can’t swear that it is actually Magness at this late date.
