Making Maggie's Orchard

The annual Orchard Pond during spring melt off:

Somehow I missed seeing this pictures until now. That’s rough.

I’ll be watching your experiences with G214 since I’m using the same. Shipment from Treco arrives sometime next week. The grafts I did last year were pretty much chowed down to the original scionwood… snow piled up and rabbits were able to hop over the chicken wire I had put around the nursery. Anxious what recovers successfully and what doesn’t.

The dwarf section of the orchard is clear of snow, the standard section still has about 1-1.5 foot. I’m going to work down there today and take inventory of what I have to regraft. I already know some of last years G.214 grafts are snapped off. Now I’m wishing I had another 25 root stocks coming.

Perry City Orchard and Nursery still has rootstocks available. Here is their current inventory.

I did a count yesterday and I have just enough for new scion and repairs. I also have a few extra M.111 and I could switch some of the new cider varieties over to that standard stock. I have a lot of field grafts to do to repair this winters damage! Thanks John.

What’s your experience with g222? I have a Monty’s surprise from burnt ridge nursery on g222 and can only find minimal info on the rootstock…

It’s fallen out of favor and is hard to even locate or buy now. I actually like it, more than G.210 that still remains available but seems to be getting less common. I found G.222 was easier to graft, success rates were better, and the root stocks handled transplanting better (better survival rate). It seems to be very similar in disease and pest resistance to G.210, as well as vigor and precociousness to the variety grafted to it. Personally, I think it’s better than G.210 and I can’t say why G.210 remains available and G.222 isn’t.

Thank you for the info! Much appreciated!

Got all the field grafting - repairs done and replacement bench grafts are done as well. New variety bench grafts are also done. Today I marked out the last two rows for spacing. I’ll get most of my remaining space planted out this spring.

Looks like Dolgo and Summer Blood are going to be first out of the gate this year:

Very wet at the orchard. The electric fence is low on battery, we haven’t had sun for days.

I put down 450 #s of fertilizer on the rows today. Looks like I’ll be able to spray early next week. The late bloomers might be close to petal fall by then.

How did your roberts crab end up?

Every one was broken, one was cracked and I tried to save it by tieing it to a suppurt stick, but that failed. Good news is all of the 4 are growing from above tne graft, or from a new graft.

I have been working hard to keep the rows clear of weeds, it’s been non-stop.

Paula Red is beautiful, it’s first year fruiting. The big one is shined up and the smaller one still has a bit of bloom on it. Haven’t tasted it yet, found these two on the ground, but appears they should be ready. Hope to check the rest and get them before the Ravens do.

I don’t hear much about Paula Red these days.

Both Paula and Ida seem to have fallen out of favor. I ate the bigger Paula Red and it was watercored, but still low flavor. They apparently don’t store well, even without the watercore, so I’ll keep an eye on them and let them go a bit longer. It was quite dense as well.

Oriole (Yellow Transparent x Liveland Raspberry), ready mid-Aug. I was probably a bit late getting to these. Two of three trees had a nice first year crop which were mostly enjoyed by the Ravens. Not surprised it was a bit soft with the Transparent lineage, but nice taste, big, and beautiful.
