Medlar, anybody?

I’ll try to remember this thread is where it is a tangent, so I can update. I know someone, i think it was in the forum here somewhere, compared it to “a blueberry with a pit.” It looks like they are sending a decent sized plant, so maybe I’ll get lucky this year. I expect it’ll be at least a couple.

You can graft it onto hawthorn, that might be a cheaper and faster method than planting.
Also many hawthorns are hardy to Zone 2 and may make your Medlar more cold hardy than whatever rootstock you buy it on.

Also try getting Arnold hawthorn! You might like it better than Medlar, it’s more like big blueberries than anything else, but has big seeds too, very productive in zone 4, hardy to Zone 2.

The royal medlar I planted last spring… a deer ate the top out of it… so it is still only 3 ft tall and single stem.

I got scion of nottingham recently and will be grafting it over once it leafs out some.

I am going to put a 50" tall cage on and keep it single stem to about 4.5 ft. Then let it branch out/up… That works well for mulberries here … should for medlar.
