There is very little difference. Mirabelle de Metz looks like them as well. Not until you grow or graft a purple mirabelle will you see a noticeable color difference.
If Metz looks like them, then Geneva must be the one that doesn’t get the speckles and blush. It stays yellow.
I have never seen a pure yellow mirabelle. I think it depends upon your soil and sun. They like a lot of sun, but many can be close to pure yellow but there are still usually a few red speckles.
The raintree website lists the geneva as having the red speckles and the photo they provide has a ton. I have the 5 available types but only put the trees in this year so no fruit. I think mrs. g is correct that it depends more on environmental conditions (likely sun) to bring out the red blush and speckles.
I was lucky enough to find mirabelles sold here at a farmers market in NYC. Heres what came in a small basket- they vary in appearance. I will try to ask the orchard what variety as I am very curious.
May I ask how much they charge for mirabelles at Farmer’s Market?
This year my mirabelles taste subpar. Not that sweet. Many not sweet at all. Too much rain and not enough sun has done that to the taste.
They were 7$ for a punnet. For reference I’ve seen strawberries, blueberries, peaches etc for 8$ or rarely as low as 5$ per punnet. So priced the same as any other fruit pretty much. Never seen them before but never looked either. Bout 40-45 or so mirabelles for 7$
Yes they were subpar but my first time having them in years. They are grown in pougkeepsie, so the same issues with tons of rain and clouds we are having. My trees are 2 miles from mass in rensselaer county if you know where that is- nearby you and yup tons of rain this year.
Thanks.
You must be a British. I have not heard American call that container a punnet
Only in NY that they can sell a pint of mirabellles for $7.
Wow! 7 dollars?
