Monstera deliciosa fruits

I’ve seen some videos,where the fruit is left on a countertop,until the scales are freely flaking off.

I assume that will only work if you pick it shortly before it would ripen, or at least that you’d need to wait until it’s at some sufficient stage of maturation, but I don’t know what signs to look for. I have picked ones that were just starting to shed scales at the base, and those finish ripening just fine. But it’s hard to be patient enough because the fruit doesn’t ripen all at once and you don’t want to eat the parts that aren’t ripe yet.
