hey man, it looks like you’re in my neck of the woods. I live in Montgomery County. I’m new to growing pears and im wondering if you have any you recommend? I am looking to grow without spray, and I do have a moonglow but its 1 yr and ill remove it if its pointless. I also have Ayers and Seckel. Any help would be much appreciated!
See the thread on fireblight resistant pears. The really fireblight resistant pears are a short list
Warren, Farmingdale, Potomac, tyson, Hood, Bell, Clark’s Small Yellow, Blake’s Pride, etc should be on your radar.
thanks, ive been checking it out its just so much! haha - thats why i was asking someone who lives in my area to help me narrow it down
I put in a Honeysweet. It’s at least another year from producing. I’m in Delco. Potomac, Shenandoah, Bell and Harrow Sweet also looked good.
I planted a Potomac and Warren in the spring. No firelight, but only about 2 feet tall bareroots. I do spray all my trees pretty close to the VT spray schedule.
Have had no issues with my row of moonglow yet this time.
I had heard you disparage it before. What was your past experience with Moonglow?
Moonglow is not a great pear in my past experience. It doesn’t have anything outstanding about it. We will see this time.
Anything that doesn’t take heavy Firelight damage and taste better then Kieffer is worth a shot. I have one, but it’s growing very slow and has never set fruit.
I think my moonglow is 4 years old now, and not a pear to be seen. It has been hit by fireblight fairly hard before, many on the forum say the same about theirs. Fed up with it, I top worked most of it with sierra last spring. This spring the sierra grafts had pears on them, moonglow branches still had none.
The things we all brought up are all the problems with moonglow. It does have some resistance to fireblight. I put it on BET rootstock this time!
I don’t have to worry about tasting it anymore as I annually prune off the infected wood, and goodbye blooms
I had it on quince and it fruited well for me. The fruit is garbage. Really hard to ripen and the taste is not all that great. Had two trees of them and both are something else now. No FB though.
Yes, I have had one for twenty years.
I am looking at Elaine & Plumblee to fill out the season from August to end of October.
