Muscadines 2024

I’ve had very good results with Big Red. I’ve had a couple of canes of Black Beauty killed by cold. IMO Big Red can handle colder temps than Black Beauty.

Dean Family Acres posted a couple videos from UGA’s muscadine field day this year.

UGA 6-1-269 seems intriguing.

Will my wild muscadines vines planted in the open be as winter hardy as opposed to the wild muscadine vines growing in the deep woods?

Generally yes, caveat that any muscadines in a frost pocket will be likely to freeze given your location near the northern range of muscadines.

I watered both my vines yesterday… and many other new starts… and a few hours later it rained… then later near dark it rained again… then last night it rained again.

Oh well… they got plenty of water.

Where can I find Muscat Plant Florida Agate for sale?

To be honest I had never heard of Muscat Plant Florida Agate. After googling it I’m still not sure what it is.

@tennessean, I think that @iemgu had an autocorrect circumstance in their post and was intending to ask “Where can I find muscadine plants in Florida state for sale?”

If @iemgu is looking for one of the newer patented improved varieties such as Oh My it probably won’t be found at a local garden center. In my experience they only carry the older stuff like scuppernong, Cowart and etc. They may carry these year-around. The prices are still outrageous though.

Why can’t they take the ‘improved’ label off and sell it to me for $5 bucks? :grinning:

My Isons and Oh My are getting close to filling the trellis wire.

The vines running in the morning sun direction have grown a bit faster than the ones growing in the evening sun direction.

My wild muscadines would have done better if I had not let the gourds invade them.

Isons

Oh my

October 30… still growing but slower now.

Both grew stronger to the left… which is east… toward the morning sun… and grew a little weaker to the right/west towards the evening sun.

Some critter (looked like insect) tip pruned the right side of Oh My… which slowed down its progress heading west even more. It has a new tip now and is continuing west.

No frost in my 10 day yet … they may grow some more.

Friends, do you have any pictures of the ripening of Muscadine grapes this year?

@iemgu … if you will scroll back up this thread until you get to mid August you will see buckets and bags full of ripe dimes.

Not many photos that amaze me, scroll to mid-August

@iemgu

My 2 vines were started last spring… isons and oh my. They both grew well this year filling up 20 ft of trellis wire (each).

I may let them set a small amount of fruit next year for a taste… but it will be year 3 before i let them fruit all they want.

Auburn posted several pictures of 5 gal buckets full of dimes and quart bags full he was giving to his neighbors.

I have heard the guys with mature vines say you can get 30-50 lbs or more of mucsadines from one mature vine. That varies some by variety.

Properly managed, a muscadine vine can produce 100 to 150 pounds of fruit per year.

Anyone have those Blue X plant shelters from Ison’s and keep them on for more than a year? It says on their site to take them off after a year, but I want to protect the trunk of my vines from my dogs.

You’re better off making a wire mesh tube to protect the trunk from dogs. Leaving tubes like the"blue x" on overwinter can sometimes cause the plant to wake up and try to grow too early in the spring due to the greenhouse effect they provide.

Another vote for wire mesh tubes. Stops deer, dogs, rabbits, and does not cause problems with breaking dormancy.
