will any grow in black locust logs? I’ve got a few coming down today and might keep some log sections if so.
These are King Oyster, growing in a plastic bin of supplemented sawdust. The camera makes them seem bigger than they actually are; but I’ll start picking today . . . .
Oh that’s interesting! Do you by chance know the name of that oyster that originated on an apple tree? But yeah, generally I am not not super worried because I read that Oysters are pretty aggressive, as well as read reports of people finding them on apple trees in the wild.
arborist said they won’t grow on black locust, almost nothing will. but he brought me alder and maple logs and a ton of cherry and maple chips for my mushroom spots so it’s ok.
but the answer is no good or edible kind wants the black locust.
This is super helpful, thanks! I’ll keep it bookmarked until fall when I am likely to remove the rest of the tree. Will also see if the other oysters I already have going, show any progress by then.
Thinking about using the excavated stumps as mushroom logs instead of the nice logs themselves…
Anyone ever attempt this?
Wow, everything in this website is soooo much cheaper than everywhere else that i was looking at.
Have you bought from them before? I’m thinking of trying this with all the new stumps I’m about to get tomorrow
No. I know that specific link I sent is a syringe of spawn, which is like the step before the substrate and plug kits you get from like North Spore. Looks like alot of their stuff is sold out too, but they do have pretty good pricing.
I’ve never tried it, but vendors of spore recommend it as a possible strategy, especially for maitake on oak.
OMG I’m jealous.
I don’t think I’ve ever grown Elm Oyster before, so this was new territory. They were slow but I’m Ok with that so long as they don’t get contaminated. I started these in rye on April 18, then moved to supplemented sawdust on May 3.
The oyster (blue?) mushrooms that appeared last year have regrown. Sadly, something has gotten to it before me. These were so tasty last year,
and I meant to order from North Spore and intentionally seed this spring in mulch/straw, but….fall project.
Bunnies like mushrooms.
They came by, ate all the shrooms and some leaves, then left
Yes. I didn’t notice it growing or I would have put up chicken wire around it. I’ll get “serious” about mushrooms in the fall and continue to read here to learn about how y’all are doing it.
I got lucky and do nothing. I’ve noticed though… 4 days of on and off rain + scratching the woodchips around my home makes morel mushrooms pop up
I inoculated four 6" tulip poplar logs with pink oyster in April. I never ate pink oysters, I have heard they taste like shrimp but will not keep long. Have any of you ever grown them before?
I put some in last year and they produced one handful of pathetic little things. it is very dry here and when it’s not it’s cold. I don’t think it’s a good climate here for those
Italian oysters come up small but frequent for me and I get a LOT of winecap.
I’m just starting to pull in mushrooms. they usually start appearing here in May but everything is late this year I think, I’ve only gotten a few until now. the beds they’re in have pretty deep wood chip and shavings and branches in them this year I topped them off, and I noticed the winecap were having trouble pushing up through. I thought deeper layer would be better but it might not be so great?
those Italian oysters are always super small, they flatten out by the time they’re two inches across. arid here, I guess it’s why.
edit: the pink oysters were DELICIOUS and that is why I was so disappointed
