Nice. Georgia must be a tough environemnt for apples. I’ve spent some time there.Good luck with those projects, they could help a lot of people.
Thanks! Happy to help ![]()
I recently ordered some scions from him and they arrived well packed and in great condition.
@SkillCult thanks for your inspiration! You helped me decide it wasn’t crazy to play the odds and plant apple seeds.
So long as all goes well, this fall I should be getting seeds from crosses I made with your pollen: fireside x cherry crush, fireside x pinker lady, and fireside x jellybean cider. I’m also growing out a few of your rubaiyat x sunrise and tomboy crab x jellybean cider seedlings. Hoping to find at least a few northern-friendly gems. ![]()
Good luck! I don’t have fireside, but I have connell red which is supposed to be a red sport. It is a good performer here.
This may be a silly question, but is there an easy way to extract seeds from an apple other than cutting small pieces off very carefully? My apples from crosses are starting to ripen and I don’t want to mess them up!
I cut around in a ring, around the circumference. you can use a thin butter knife or other dulling knife if you want. then twist the apple apart and take out the seeds.
Awesome, should have figured he had instructions. Thanks! ![]()
Classy. I like it. I think my 4-year-old will like this method.
That sounds much easier than what I was doing. Thanks! ![]()
Has anyone fruited Tomboy crab yet? I am interested in this apple and would love to hear more experiences from others growing it.
I was greedy and let one of my grafts keep a fruit. It was looking good…until today. Now it seems to be missing. So good enough for some critter. Better luck next year.
Bummer, you were so close to knowing! ![]()
I actually found the nibbled corpse this morning. The pink was there and the seeds were developed. So it was on track at least. Looked like bunny marks so it must have dropped.
If anyone else has gotten one over the finish-line, when did yours ripen and what is your growing zone? From what I’ve seen I’m assuming late September for Z7.
I went out and checked and mine are still not ripe. The only notes I can find say good mid November. One could go through my tasting videos looking for it, but that would likely be a journey.
9a Someone liked it ![]()
Yeah, should have been me. Those f#ckers!
9a compared to 7a. So maybe it ripens with the cold. Weve had some upper 40’s nights already.
For comparison my honeycrisp that are still on that tree have started to go mealy.
