Try zucchini taste the same but are smooth. There are yellow zucchini, or, someone correct me if im wrong but straight neck squash are smoother. I don’t think your squash looks weird, it is pretty bumpy, but not unusually so.
Oh, if that squash is too weird. Okra is in a whole new level of weird. It is delicious but unique.
I grow okra for seed to send to Sandhill. This year it is Granny Franklin. Last year was Louisiana 16 inch. I’ve grown Cowhorn, Jing Orange, and at least a dozen others over the years. There was a time he paid me far too much to grow okra based how difficult it is to grow in his climate. Down here, it is so well adapted to the heat and humidity that I can produce a gallon of seed and have all the okra I want to eat at the same time. It may be an acquired taste, but I grew up eating it.
I used to buy squash seed from Park with really good results. https://www.parkseed.com/collections/squash
I very much enjoy Zephyr squash from Johnnyseeds. Squash Seeds - Organic & Heirloom Varieties | Johnny's Selected Seeds
Thanks. I tried our zucchini tonight. My husband prefers it, but I prefer the buttery flavor of yellow squash. I’ll keep trying techniques and varieties until I find what works.
Edit to add: okra is a very interesting (and spiny!) plant. My mom grew it once when I was a teen. The problem we had was figuring out how to cook it in a way we liked. She liked it boiled, but the slime made me gag. We both liked it battered and fried, but it’s messy and uses a lot of oil. I decided then that I wouldn’t grow okra again.
Thanks! I’ll try a few squash varieties next year to see if they work better for me and my environment.
Its a bumpy variety. Tastes the same.
You’ll find many smooth Yellow Summer squash varieties. If you check Johnny’s Select Seeds webpage and find Yellow Summer Squash under their Vegetable tab it will bring up several varieties of Yellow Summer Squash with a smooth exterior. You can do the same with any seed supplier with a website. Also, when you’re at your local Tractor Supply/Menards/Lowe’s/Home Depot or any retailer that has the racks with seed packets, check them out and you’ll likely find a Yellow Summer Squash with smooth exterior (Burpee/FerryMorse/et.al).
