New Asian Pear Growth Stopped

Hopefully mine will come in next year to compare. I’m expecting KG to be 1lb fruits, maybe I’m expecting too much.

As I read from Stark Bros sheet, Korean/Olympic Giant would ripen in early Oct (assuming at Stark Bros nursery location in…coincidentally Louisiana, MO). That means for you, you’re likely at least 1 month ahead (based on first frost date) in S. Louisiana, so in theory you can subtract 1 month from anything listed on their chart.

I would think so for fruit ripening as well, though my single Hosui seems to have followed the early August ripening date I’ve founds online.

It’s a young tree so size, taste, ripening time are subject to change in the coming years.

…Right, and also based on how soon or late spring comes.

The seeds aren’t completely dark yet so it looks like you actually picked it too early despite the color looking right.

Right right… Hadn’t thought of that.

Good catch…now to remember that for next year…

I think it’s interesting that despite you being much further south, mine are but a week or 2 away from being harvestable. The harvest period does stretch about 3 weeks here with the fruit ripening a few at a time.

Bring back this thread to ask a question, what do you think of this pear, ready to pick yet. This fruit is the size of a small apple.

I’m certainly not expert ad judging Asian pear ripeness, but I do have Hosui. When its good, its hard to beat.

The deep rich, orange gold blush looks good. I think another factor for ripeness is the background color. I look for no hint of green tinge:

Somewhere between when no hint of green remains, and before there is give or wrinkling in the flesh. Too long and the texture degrades.

I think I would wait one more week and that’s it.

Here’s another reference for you. The lowest one towards the center is ready but the one to the right still has a couple weeks to go. The ones above it have maybe another week before they’re optimal. My fully colored ones already have black seeds here and are very tasty.

Ok, mine looks like your lower right, maybe the squirrel will let me wait 2 more weeks, it came back today.

Great illustrative example.

So today I went outside to check on my fruit trees, here is what I picked

But after I cut it out, it’s actually overripe and rote.

Did something bore into it? Looks like frass from caterpillar damage.

Yes, but the seeds were already black. I did manage to cut the core out and ate the rest, but it’s overripe.

Damage will make it ripen much faster :frowning:

Looks like codling moth frass. That was probably visible for some time if you looked at the calyx end. Probably had some ripe pear smell for a while too if you put your nose right up to it.

Damaged fruit ripen unevenly, can be overripe next to damage and still green at other end.

Next year I will look harder, this was my first year with a decent size.

Yeah, sorry it didn’t work out BTW. It can be frustrating.

Thisis my first year of having pears to harvest, so I don’t have a clue.
These maybe 20th Century, are they look ok to pick. As far as I can tell there are no bugs yet, but they swelled up after the rain.

As a further indication of how weird this summer has been, I’ve got another bloom on my small 3-on-1 Asian pear.

Also I. Assuming the fuzzy buds on these. Asian pears will be fruiting spurs next year? Other growth only had normal liking small mature vegetative buds.
