New Raised Beds - how to keep them even?

Use what the Early civilizations used to level cathedrals and other critical buildings aqueducts etc. No need for expensive gadgets: a simple meniscus with your water hose with always be the most accurate way to measure vertical difference between two points! You can get a 1-2’ clear hose attachment to fasten between the two ends of your water hose, start with one point as your desired vertical reference and then go to each other to adjust up or down from your reference.
Only takes one person to mark each point.

What are your tolerances? This will determine the measuring tools needed.
Can the variance from level of one 8-foot bed be one inch or do you require 1/8" ?
Can the variance from the highest to the lowest bed in the group be one foot or does it have to be within one inch?

I have an engineer’s eye, but might resort to a carpenter’s level and string for a large-scale project.

To align the beds relative to the distant house, just take a compass reading at the nearest corner of the house and plot out the overall garden area using the same readings. Should be accurate within a degree or two.

No reason to make it complicated when it can be simple. Usually when we make it complicated it means we don’t know an easier way to do it.
