Northern Mid-Atlantic: SE-PA/N-VA/MD/NJ/DE Region

A grafted branch of Arkansas black yielded two immaculate specimens this year. I have not tried them yet, as I do not want to break a tooth.

Marta’s scion sale (reallygoodplants.com) is coming up and I’m thinking of ordering some scions.

In particular, I’m thinking of adding some additional apricot varieties into my tree and was looking at getting bonny royal, white knockout, Lasgerdi Mashhad and Moniqui. I may also add her Altair #4 just because it seems to be a very late blooming variety.

Any of my fellow mid-Atlantians growing these varieties and have thoughts on how they perform here? I think Moniqui could be an earlier blooming variety, so maybe I should drop that, but wasn’t really sure.

Who has White Knockout? I’m looking to add it and maybe some other whites myself, but I’m waiting to see if I can get them in trade first. I have several varieties not listed in your post if your interested in any of them.

Marta will have it in her scion sale. I was mostly going to order from her to get a few hybrid persimmons and the white apricots. I’m pretty happy with Ilona and Tomcot (when I get them), but I think White knockout is sort of between an orange and white if I’m correct. And she had recommended Bonny Royal as very good tasting. The apricots are so vigorous I don’t mind grafting a bunch in and later cutting them out if they don’t work or taste great, since the trees grow so fast.

CWB is worth consideration. It’s my fav out of the six varieties I have.

Canadian White? Sounds good since it seems to be another later bloomer. Does it do any better than others in a frosty year?

I have both White Knockout and Lasgerdi, both are excellent! I am thinking of adding Bonny Royale too, but I heard it is a bad cracker.

For me apricots have not really had any problems setting. I’ve yet to have a down year. I’m looking to graft over several of mine with whites. That’s my new obsession at the moment. Your right though. You make a graft and next year it starts producing. Easy to keep changing.

I’ve had trouble getting most of the whites to set regularly. White Knockout looks like it might be an exception though, it was the only apricot to set this last year with all the frosts. CWB, Moniqui, and Lasgerdi can all be stingy setters.

Thanks Scott. I’ll be grafting them into an existing tree, so I’ll give the best graft positions to White Knockout.

Any chance you’ve tried Bonny Royale? I picked up scion from Marta, but I’ve also heard it is a big splitter if you get much rain.

Anyone DC metro want to go in on a Fedco order together/any interest in sharing Fall/August red raspberry? They sell in 5’s and I can barely fit 2.

If it were an ACN order I’d consider it,
I’m having much the same issue with needing to order a minimum of 5 trees from them, and only actually needing 1, and only having the space for maybe two to three.

If anyone in a reasonable driving distance to Fredericksburg or Charlottesville VA is in a similar spot with ACN and may be interested in discussing splitting an order let me know.

Best of luck Eme on your own order.

I’m driving to pick up an ACN order in March- they don’t have a minimum for pick ups. I tried to find people to reach the shipping minimum earlier, but couldn’t. I can pick up for you, just message me about it.

What is ACN’s full name?
Eme, I can take some raspberries. Don’t really need anymore, but I have space .
DM me with your thoughts/details.

Every spring I make the rounds to all the local nurseries, as well as HD, TS, and Lowes. A yearly ritual that I really enjoy. You would be surprised how much you can find locally that is potted and much bigger sizes than on line. I would suggest one of the Meadow Farms in NOVA. Last year they had a vast array of the latest varieties of berries.

Thanks for the tip. I much prefer buying locally, if possible. I had beef with the meadows farm in Burtonsville, but haven’t tried the ones in NOVA. I was going to see what Costco has as well in the spring. Anyone found anything fun there?

I got my elderberry duo there for dirt cheap. I go to the Gaithersburg one. They have a lot of your dormant plants in the center I feel like usually march ish? They have blueberries, grapes, black/raspberries. I don’t think I saw any kiwi. But they were all really nice priced.

One of my friends found a bunch of stuff at either lidil or Aldi I forget which last year near Wheaton I think. They had jenny fuzzy kiwi and a bunch of other stuff.

I bought the same elderberry pair from the same place. Did both grow well? I don’t remember which cultivar is which, but one grew well 2-3ft and the other grew about a ft, died off and a small shoot grew <1ft before the fall. I’m hoping it bounces back.

Both of mine have grown great. They were John and Adam. John sends up tons of root suckers Like TONS. Adam hasn’t sent up any at all. So that’s one way you can tell them apart. This was their 2nd year in ground.

Adams County Nursery (acnursery.com).
Haven’t ordered from them before myself, but they have a pretty decent selection of apple trees it appears and reasonable prices if the 5 tree minimum to ship thing isn’t an issue.
