I’ve never experienced this. I can sort of see what you mean when I remember how the apples taste but it’s not like the almost never good ‘fishy’ comes to mind.
May is a bad time to judge an apple for its characteristic flavor and eating quality. It is a good time to judge apples for their storability.
I agree, my apples are at their best from December through February.
Apples with good flavor and eating quality generally don’t last until May. ![]()
Ive thought of this every time ive had one (which is often because im still eating them right now) and i cant see it.
They do have shitty skin though thats a bit bitter at times. But i mean thats why theyre still decent in may
Unless you have enough
, I started with five trees in 2021, now I have 13.
Ark Black and Pomme D’Fer do not even become edible until March and just start tasting good in May….lol
One thing I love about Opal is that it does not brown when cut up for lunches. Just like cosmic crisp. I usually rotate between the 2 in the kids lunches. If I put them whole, the kids never eat them. If I slice them up they always eat them. Unless they brown, then it’s compost. Alternatively, they hate when I splash browning apples down w citric acid or lemon juice. They say they are too sour. One
from me and making feeding my kids easier by low browning flesh apple.
I have whatever brain disease your kids have. I like my apples cut up too, but have to cut them myself. ![]()
Many of the modern club apples don’t brown. I think that’s one of the de facto selection criteria now.
do they not brown just when cut? i ask because i eat them and sometimes leave the core out for a bit till i make it to the trash and this + envy both brown and im told neither should. Maybe its the mouth that makes the difference lol
i used to prefer apples sliced and peeled but i havent done that in awhile
The more torn up/damaged the cells are the more quickly they’ll brown.
@evilpaul.. my wife does not like peelings… we often split an apple.. and I have to peel her half.
It does not help to tell her.. that is where all the vitamins are.

Tried my first opal apple, it’s tasted like nothing. I mean that it had no taste what so ever, nor any aroma. It had crunch and texture of an apple but was flavorless. Hopefully it’s just that one from the bag.
Most apples I’ve tried are only good a few months after picking.
I tried some Opals a month ago and they were weak.
The Evercrisp is the only new apple that seems edible after 6 months. It too looses flavor but at least it’s still sweet. A six month old York Imperial tastes much better than an 6 month old Opal.
I find biting into whole apples to be uncomfortable on my mouth so I too cut them up before eating them
I think you all like really really sweet apples.
Thanks to all the Envy lovers on this thread I went and tried it again and posted about it:
I actually have a notebook where for the last year I’ve been writing notes about the apples I eat and I record dates. I loved Opal in October and Nov. In Dec-Feb they were fine. So hopefully people try them this fall and see what they think.
