Andrew sent me some of paw paw seedlings fruits called camelo and Garage West. I really liked them both. I was able to graft a camelo 2 years ago and now Garage West which I really like because it tasted like Cherimoya and I name it Cherimowest a couple years ago. Hopefully Andrew can chime in for all your questions @JustPeachy . I also bought some pawpaw seeds KSU 1-4 from Blake 2 years ago and he told me this variety tasted like Marshmallows. Hopefully they will fruit in a few years.
Check some of the posts from Sep 22 in the Pawpaws 2022 thread and last year in the Pawpaw Varieties thread. Thereās a rundown on them in there.
Buzzās inventory goes on sale online today at 12pm EDT and he should have many of Just Peachyās varieties for sale (not sure what he grafted this year). I do all of my own grafting now, but may support Buzz with a Garage West purchase if he doesnāt go up on prices again.
Cherimoya is very sweet and creamy custard taste and doesnāt have that strong caramel taste like in the ripe Susquehanna paw paw. Garage West aka Cherimowest has a little of that Cherimoya taste to me. I found a wild paw paw tre that has a similar cherimoya taste but that tree died and I lost my graft due to a mower.
I could have swore Buzz had GarageWest and CherimoyaWest listed separately in the dropdown (but canāt check that now since I guess heās about to put new inventory and took down the 2-year graft page).
Will check later today when new stock goes up.
EDIT: Hmm didnāt see [anything with the word] West on his site at all, must be soldout quick or no grafts of it.
EDIT#2: I found this qoute from @JustPeachy :
Just peachy sent me a Garage West and a West pawpaw scions also. I may chip bud a West on one of the larger root stock with the new graft on top. Thanks for the reminder.
Yeah looks like no grafts of them this year. They were slower to sell last year because of the lack of name recognition. He could take the time to get some descriptions up to really promote them more, but alasā¦
Iāll have to swing him a message to see if heās still even growing them. Otherwise Iāll have to get a stick of GW from someone here.
@Blake and @Buzzferver must be doing a brisk business! I had signed up for alerts from Buzz and within 9 minutes ā the time it took me to fill out the form ā two of the three cultivars I had hoped to get were sold out. Did nab a Shenandoah from Buzz, and a few from Blake (KYT, FW, ND) since I was on the VIP list.
I did notice that neither of them had Halvin come back in stock. Iād identified that as a contender for my Zone 5 planting location. Curious to hear if/why Halvin wasnāt available ā quality? Killed by frosts? Slower to grow and graft? Etcā¦
I did a graft of Halvin this year. I think many consider VE-21 to be a better alternative to Halvin (taste, size, very early ripening) so itās dropping to the bottom of the nursery priority list.
I have a bunch of varieties growing here and can do a graft of whatever you want down the road since youāll be in my area.
Iāve only tried one Garage West, so not really a fair sample (plus it was shipped), but to @hambone ās question - it didnāt taste like cherimoya to me. Cherimoya is in my experience a tiny bit tart and has strawberry/pineapple/bubblegum flavors and sometimes pine resin.
I do recall as you say that garage west was custardy. Perhaps a bit white sapote-ish. It was hard to describe- just really good. @hambone You do hear cherimoya mentioned as present in some pawpaws but so far Iāve not encountered it and also not aware of any cultivars that are known for it.
Soursop has some acid sour taste in it. I usually blend them with ice and some sugar for a real good smoothie plus you can spike it up with some etoh is you like. But Cherimoya is so sweet here in our Asian market. It is usually goes fir $9 per pound and one fruit is 1.5 pounds.
Iāve had both. I would be shocked if atemoya is routinely imported to US and sold as Cherimoya. The cherimoya Iāve seen in Asian markets in US are in fact Cherimoya.
I know itās grown in Southern Florida, Riverside California & North side of Phoenix, in small amounts. Iāve seen it mixed with & sold as cherimoya.
I guess itās currently a localized behavior.
I am lost & confused.
Someone gave me a Pawpaw plant, I think it is a wild seedlying.
It is under ten foot tall & has bloomed, but never bared fruit.
Across the path, opposite the tree, about 15 feet away from the pawpaw tree, is two one foot seedlings. I never notice them, then one day they were there. My plant as never bared fruit, could this be spouts from a root or did I have fruit & never saw it?
Probably root suckers from your seedling tree. You need another different variety to cross pollinate it. So graft some different varieties to your seedling and root suckers.
