Don’t know about selling but I’ve seen forum members mailing pollen to each other.
Photos from yesterday. Amazes me how fast this tree has grown. Hopefully I’ll share photos of the fruit this fall.
How old is it? Is this an grafted improved variety, seeding from two improved varieties or wild?
There’s a Google Maps thing with locations of trees on it. My trees aren’t flowering yet, but I found a couple that were a few mints from my house.
I can send some Pawpaw pollen,Ari.
@FarmGirl-Z6A It’s a seedling that KSU gave the city of Louisville to plant, this particular one has very dense and sweet flesh(not overpowering flavorwise though).
Through talking with the city and KSU it’s most likely a Sunflower/Susquehanna seedling.
The ortet is at risk of being lost to development, and the tree has never given much care at all(didn’t produce much either). The few that it did produce I really enjoyed. There were other seedling trees in the same area but none were as good. One tree in that patch made a juicy white fleshed pawpaw that was the worst thing I ever tasted(a shame since it made a ton of large fruits).
I grafted it at home on since I didn’t want it to be lost. The rootstock was a tiny grafted tree that died back to the roots, so I selected the strongest shoot, grafted, then kept the rest trimmed.
Btw i think i saw a FB comment from Buzz Ferver saying some grafted varieties will be for sale on his site very soonish. I forget which FB group/post i saw that comment, but think you have to sign up for his mailing list to know when… i don’t check my email much during the day, but i do check this site… so if someone gets that alert from him that his store is stocked again, let us know here :).
UPDATE: I got confirmation as i found the comment;
But man, its really hard to figure out how to join the mailing list. I think I saw a popup to join once on desktop (not Mobile). then it went away. I assume i could open in a new Incognito Window so it comes back but could find. The header says you can join via the Contact Page (but i only see the actual contact form there)… i asked via the contact form if he can add me to the mailing list:
Update#2: I think i was able to do it via another browser, then have to scroll down on the homepage, then the white popup will come up to join the mailing list.
Usually Blake at Peaceful Heritage usually has grafted trees for sale in June, he does sell out quick though
Deer have never bothered our pawpaws which are just out in the open, but I guess one was feeling adventurous. It nibbled on a fruiting branch and then almost entirely defoliated a 3.5’ grafted tree. It also tasted a wild variety I was planning to graft soon. Luckily it didn’t hit the other much smaller grafts I have. We put welded wire circles around ALL of our trees except these and today I’m making some for the small grafts. I am now thinking if I have fruit this year it will be a battle to keep the deer away so I had better plan ahead.
I think if you have fruit your problem will likely be raccoons.
With enough deer and not enough food they’ll slowly damaged themselves eating pawpaw branches rather than starve…
@disc4tw I was quite surprised with the abundance of food nearby, our property is very lush and wild. I should have at least hit the grove with liquid fence. Lesson learned.
@ansayre We really don’t get many raccoons bothering my fruit trees. There is a golf club nearby and they gorge themselves on leftovers and trash. The ones my trail cams have picked up are the fattest things I’ve ever seen, year round. But maybe pawpaws will be irresistible.
Don’t underestimate a hungry raccoon, but a well fed one might not be as much of a threat. Keep us posted!
Whats the best tasting early-ripening pawpaw if had to choose 1 or 2 (for zone 5b)?
Between VE-21, Summer Delight, Tropical Treat (think alot of these were mentioned as August ripening on Cliff’s site), maybe Allegheny too, maybe Kentucky Champion (listed as early-bearing but also “good candidate for climates that are challenged for growing-degree-days” which i assume is early-ripening too).
I have some other ones listed as early-ripening but these stand out as possibly very flavorful ones.
Isn’t tropical treat very late?
From what I’ve read, I think I would lean VE-21 and Summer Delight although SD can be a little slower to establish. Allegheny would be my next choice of those. I have all 3 of these, but no fruit on them yet.
I wasnt sure as Cliff said “ripens mid-August in Kentucky” on his Tropical Treat description. and i thought August is about as early as you can get down South for pawpaws. (Summer Delight desc sounds like earliest and that is 1st week of August).
