Awesome! Glad to hear it!
I’ve had a similar experience with Chappell…planted in 2019 along with Atwood and 4 Peterson varieties, it is now in 2025 about 15 feet tall and at least 50% bigger than any of the others…very large leaves …a dense tree… and vigorous growth (see post #918 with picture for comparison)…will taste my first fruit from it this year… zero Phyllosticta on any of my trees.to date…Chappell has been a winner for me so far
You are very lucky!
yes…after reviewing this thread, I’m realizing that…not at all sure why…maybe the site? …but I looked for it the other day when I was down there and saw none.,.does it usually show up late in the season after growth stops?..I’ll check again in another two weeks…probably just a matter of time…who knows?..my lawn guy is coming soon…I’m going to ask him to take another photo of the 7 pawpaw cluster on the Chappell he took three weeks ago…I hope he remembers where it is and can find it again…we will see.
It depends on rainfall and other environmental conditions but here in TN I’d say generally in June sometime, which is mid season.
First fruit of the season. Good size, good flavor, good texture, and a very nice yellow color when ripe on the side with a lot of sun exposure.
Ok, before it gets too late again to ask this year, please, is anyone here planning, or willing to ship pawpaw fruit?
I know the west coast is far for many of you, but I would really love the opportunity to try pawpaws this year, even if means they’ll be a bit mushy from the trip.
Thanks,
Eddie
Very nice!
Those early fruits I posted about earlier all had off flavors. They had good texture and fragrance and even the up front flavor was very good, but the backend flavor was meaty.
Varmints have already stolen a few fruits.
They are too busy stealing my peaches, and now figs and pears, to bother with the pawpaws yet. Usually the pawpaws get some damage but not too bad, whereas they stole almost all my peaches.
Reposting this again as it sounds timely. You all with raccoons and possum issues might find this useful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH8hRzNPfbI
…OK…my lawn guy found the same bunch…that’s why I pay him the big bucks!..he said he thinks he only saw 5 on the bunch now…originally there were 7…but they are now much bigger 3 weeks later…at least 3 of them…also…maybe a hint of Phyllosticta on some of the leaves?..so maybe still 1.5 months till they ripen??..still a long wait
My girl was loaded then the Neighbors Doves came and ate all the small fruit . I’m thinking about changing my diet a little from chicken turkey Quail and adding Dove and pigeon to it . I’m also thinking about adding another pawpaw and different mulberry trees . so any advice for what grows best here I just have the one tree and its fruited great for the last 6 yrs but new neighbors with doves and rolling pigeons ? I’m thinking netting up my trees I haven’t gotten much fruit since they moved in last yr
Dove is delicious
I don’t see any phyllosticta there, so that’s good.
The missing fruits were probably just aborted by the tree, which is normal.
They size up pretty rapidly just before ripening.
Good luck!
I began seeing Asimina webworms in my orchard yesterday. This is the time of year they begin hatching.
I’ve been on the lookout but so far I’ve not seen them.
I do typically have a couple trees in a particular spot that get a little infestation- always at the tops of the trees.
can i cook them like i do Quail ? i grow my own but I’m thinking ring necked doves eating my fruit laying their eggs in my chicken coop cant be cared for enough.
or do you just eat the breasts ?
All the people that I know of that eat dove only eat the breasts and the rest is cat food.
Not doves, but I like Bandtail pigeons. They flock in the 100s or even 1000s to my home in Del Norte County, CA. Very gamey, but good. Previously, I’ve always cooked them stuffed whole over a campfire, but I’ve found even they aren’t big enough birds to make much of anything except the breast worthwhile. Toothpick drumsticks are… difficult.
That was an interesting digression, but let’s keep the thread on topic please
