Bestseed. If I transplant at the beginning of second year. Do you wait until the following year to graft to let transplants recover from transplant shock?
Could be , I have never tried fall fertilization but late growth spells doom for persimmon trees around here.
Iāve never had fertilizer cause a persimmon tree to re-start growth once itās done for the year. Grapes yes, but not persimmons. I donāt typically use synthetics, though, so theyāre never getting a huge shot of N all at once. Could make a difference.
A follow-up question. I started seeds in tree-pots and 5 gallon buckets. At 7 weeks they started to sprout. Now I am past 20 with more popping up every day (8 weeks out). The seedlings in the tree pots (started a little later) are about the same as the 5 gallon buckets. Any recommendation for an optimum growing temperature? I set up a dome with a space heater. I set it to 80F. After a little trial and error I got a small fan to circulate the heat and it is pretty uniform.

The two rich tooie seedlings⦠that I grew from seed⦠i planted them out in my orchard Feb 20.
On March 28 the larger seedling looked like this.
Then on April 4⦠they both looked like this.
I grafted kassandra on the larger seedling and Nakitas gift on the smaller one that day. Both successful.
When i saw how vigorously they were budding and leafing out⦠made me feel much better about foing forward with the grafts.
Good luck to you !
Note⦠persimmons bud out later than just about everything else⦠they were the last things I grafted last spring.
So if you do get them planted in Feb like I did⦠they may have a good month or more to get established some before they even start bud swell.
I transplanted two callery pear last year mid Jan⦠and grafted to them late Feb⦠and both were very successful.
The callery were already producing shoots and leaves late Feb⦠but my earliest persimmons did not do that until April 4.
Love to bring this topic back to life! First year trying to grow persimmons from seeds. Iāve had them in my refrigerator for about 2 months. I donāt see any roots starting to come out of any of them. I am located in NY. Should I wait until I see roots or after another month can put in potting soil and hope that increases the changes of the seed sprouting? I plan on putting all the seeds in a 5 gallon pale and transplanting them into individual containers as they grow! Any advise is appreciated
You wonāt see roots while they are in the fridge. Now that theyāve had their dose of cold you can take them out and plant them. I would do it outside and just let them warm up naturally and start to grow. Keep the vermin away from them of course. I assume you are talking about native persimmons. Iāve had very good luck with those in my 7a climate doing this. (btw, you donāt have to take up room in your fridge. If you put the seeds in a tin can punched with a lot of holes to let moisture in/out you can bury the can in shallow soil and let it naturally go through its winter cycle. Then dig up in March/April and move the seeds where you want them. At that point you may very well see roots on them. The purpose of the can is to protect from animals)
