About the same, about the last freeze tonight and I’m going to be getting my new medlars and gooseberries in the ground tomorrow, there MAY be a couple days of 32 degrees next week… But I’m not too worried about it, my older gooseberries are already flowered and producing fruit and one of the year old medlars is leafing out too xD

Anyone around MSP have typical first leaf dates? Seeing first leaves today on my Nikita rootstock and curious how much sooner that is vs unprotected locations? I see no signs yet on my unprotected ones
Yeah, apparently my land hit around 24 degrees last night according to The Weather Channel. I’m going to head over there today to get all the frost cloth removed. Fingers crossed that the leaves made it through.

The plants had quite a large amount of dieback. All the leaves are completely black and the top growth of the plant has died back as well. It appears that there is still healthy wood above the graft, so I’m hopeful these trees bud from this area and make a recovery.
It was a scary sight seeing all the trees in such condition, but this cold snap kind of came out of left field. I was not anticipating 24 degrees.
I’ve since got the first few new medlars into the ground and they seem to be handling the late frosts pretty well. I’ve also gotten 4 of my new persimmons but they’re a bit smaller than I expected xD ah well. Looks like tomorrow sunday will be the FINAL late frost.
Are you telling me your trees decided to start growing leaves and they died because of the late frosts? O_o Well damnit.
Yeah, I bought them when they were already leafed out. We had one really cold 24 degree night that really hurt them, even with frost covers on.
I do think they should make a recovery though from the buds further down the scion wood.
And yeah, let’s hope tomorrow is the final late frost!
Are your persimmons still dormant?
Ah kk, no my persimmons are sitting on the kitchen counters… xD They’re leafed out a bit so I’m apprehensive about putting them out yet lol. Reminds me of when I first got my 2-3 year gooseberry bushes, couple of them seemed to die all the way back to the ground because I was too overloaded xD But NOW they’re just EXPLODING. One in particular has reached well over 6 feet. I’ll probably get some pictures of them in a bit with the persimmons.
Yeah, I wish I would’ve just left mine in the pots until now haha. And yeah, definitely send some pictures!
Are cultivated gooseberries quite tasty? I’ve only had experiences with foraging the wild ones and I have always found the taste a bit meh.
So here’s the persimmons along with various other plants, there’s also one of my medlars and a nice big group of my gooseberries

i just planted a tin cup and deer luscious trees from blue hill. also planted oranged, and tango persimmon seed from oikios. i also have a unnamed variety seedling thats 5ft already with 0 care from a trade. once my named varieties grow out some , ill graft it over to one of them. all are supposed to be hardy, early ripening varieties.

Another 26 degree freeze last night. It has been brutal out here with the low temperatures this May… ugh.
I’m scared to go see my J-59 now. I didn’t cover it and figured I’d let it fight through the 31 degree expected temperature.

30 predicted tonight and tom. my lone persimmon seedlings at green tip still so should be good to go. deer luscious and tin cup planted last week are still fully dormant.

So decided to scrap my idea of growing persimmions 
I got so many medlars now to worry about and their roots will be enough to handle, don’t need persimmons making it worse xD

My persimmons are all still lifeless since the cold damage they suffered. I may have to start fresh next year and be way more cautious about when I plant them. It’s looking like the grafts may be dead.

It’s tough because we don’t have one known hardy for the zone 4b upper midwest yet. But on the flip side they don’t get fireblight.

And even then it doesn’t matter that much if only 1/1000 rootstock persimmons is cold hardy enough
yea, but I’m making up for it by getting a whole bunch of honey berry and more gooseberry bushes! xD
But I WOULD really like to at least try a persimmon one of these days, maybe if I ever travel out of state again.
