Persimmons 2025

When my tam kam went down with SDS it was fast. It was fine one day and completely dead the next. It did shoot up some american root sprouts though.

When I cut down a Saijo tree dying of KSD I sprayed roundup on the stump to kill the roots. I was afraid of potential root grafts affecting nearby trees but no collateral damage happened and no suckers ever came up in this instance. I wanted all traces of that tree dead in hopes of preventing the KSD from spreading.

I wonder if SDS changes with the type of graft. I don’t know, just throwing it as an idea…

The grafting types have nothing to do with KSD in my opinion.

I also wonder about mulch, sprays, etc. Has anyone experimented with that? I know Kakis hate fungicides, for example.

As I’m looking into KDS, there are so many variables that could affect this… It’s overwhelming!

Praying that out of my 7 kakis in East Texas I can have some reliable long-term producers.

As long as you didn’t get an infected American persimmon rootstock you don’t have anything to worry about

I bought all of them from Starkbros. I’m hoping they’re not infected.

My Cardinal persimmon is putting on some nice growth already this year.

My IKKJiro starting year 3.

It is making blossoms… but will it set and ripen fruit ???

My H63A graft from last year… i see a few blossoms on it too.

This last one is Barbara’s blush… it has lots of blossoms on already.

FWIW, my stand-alone IKKJs required ~6 years before they held fruit to ripeness. My various Americans required ~3 years. When grafted to an established DV tree, pretty much everything (DK, DV, hybrid) ripens fruit the following year (i.e., 1 1/2 years after grafting). So a lot appears to depend on tha maturity of the roots / trunk.

My persimmon leafs (Fuyu) are getting eaten I think. I am really hoping it’s not kds

Can someone confirm? Should I cut the new limbs, or will new leafs grow out of the green shoots again?

Don’t cut anything. New leaves will grow from the nodes. Most likely deer. My grafts were stripped by deer like this last year. The new growth then emerged during peak psylla season.

That isn’t KSDS… I’m seeing similar damage on some of my persimmons this spring. I suspect it might be slugs. I can rule out deer because they’re growing within deer-proof cages.

That’s my concern - it’s always nice to get mature leaves before the psylla arrive since they prefer the new growth.

Thank you guys. Mine is not deer either, they are the only trees affected and are in a fenced area that deer don’t get in.

Glad no kds

Got my MDC persimmon order in on Friday, potted them up Saturday. Got a nice bundle this year. Better than half are useable grafting size. 8 out of 25 were 1/4" or better. For once, I think my grafting will be limited by scion rather than rootstocks.

Roots looked great, too. Required very little root pruning. And I wish I had marked this one. First time I’ve seen one with a nice root crown like that instead of a tap root.

I suspect a roadside tree near my house is an American persimmon, the new spring shoots have reddish tints to them. Today I took a closer look and saw tiny flowers that come in clusters of 3. Based on more experienced members on the forums, I think it’s a male tree. Can someone confirm?

Yes, male.

Maxim Kaki from Europe first year graft is loaded with flowers. Supposed to be ripen in middle of September and probably one of the earliest Kaki to be ripen.

Lou Tian Tian Shi in a growth spurt with no flowers and also the first year graft

Kuro Kaki black persimmon with nice form.

Kitaro Kaki is one of the best in Japan. It goes for high price and super good

Just budded Universal male for future crossing

Just budded David Pierce best hybrid out of his 500 hybrid persimmons called KYT aka Kentucky Thanksgiving.

Just budded a rare one called KolhospnytsiaI. I think this one is the mother of Dar Sofiyivky.

Very nice! Sounds like a lot of exciting new varieties.

Haven’t been around the forum much lately, so some of these are new to me. Is Maxim any hardier, or just early? And can you tell me about Novost?

I may be hitting you up for Universal scion if it takes for you.

Maxim taste good with early ripening. Cold hardness probably the same like the rest of the PCNA Kaki. I will use the early ripening trait for crossing. Novost is new so I don’t have too much info on it but the leave is Kaki looking.
