I ended up ripping my store bought seeded plant out. Every fruit was getting eaten by worms. Just husks with seeds.
I’ve got every kind of ground cherry i guess- they come up here and there and vary on flavor. I planted the golden berry from store bought fruit and it has grown out over wintering in the greenhouse. this is one of the plants in ground
gb/physalis. tall as me
ground cherry, i propped it up a little with sticks:
no insect or pest pressure at all that i can tell. soon as the husk on those is yellow they taste sweet. unlike the ground cherry which must be dry husks, i can pick the Golden Berry ones sooner.
same shell color, different level of ripeness and sweetness.
they grow upright, like a tomato wants to. the ground cherries really do hug the ground. i may try to use more of those as ground cover in some places? they seem willing enough to grow and spread on their own.
the berries are all dried out and white. i pulled a couple that were anyone know what might be going on with these first drops of longiflolia?
i pulled a couple that were brown but still hanging and the berry was still green:
they seem smaller than i expected but its my first experience with them ![]()
Usually half of mine are like that, probably that huskworm. I don’t spray them.
This could also be lack of proper pollination. A lot of Physalis are not self-fertile. Both my native ground cherries do this on about 70% and I only genetically have one plant of each. It could be pest pressure, but I haven’t noticed anything on the ones that look like that
This one is Physalis grisea (Small flowers, hairy leaves with purple petioles & yellow stamens), Seed sellers often incorrectly label Pineapple Cossak as Physalis pruinosa, when it’s actually Physalis grisea, so we’ve all been wrong ever since.
I’ve seen this happen with some wild local Physalis longifolia as well, it’s usally with a problem plant (sometimes there’s a disease that effects them), perhaps that is why the calxy is dry but the fruit is still green.
