Raccoons are not smart

I’ve had the same issue with sardines, catching cats.

You mean you string it by its neck and leave it hanging there as a lesson to all the other pests like in the movies? In the middle of fruit picking season?

That might discourage me from picking my own fruit too lol.

You guys don’t have skunks?

Sardines, cat food, ripe fruit, marshmallows, etc. have been used as baits. 7 out of 10 times, I got skunks. Sometimes 3 nights in a row.

Skunks get the same treatment only with a little more care.

Felt the urge to pick some muscadine at midnight. Came face to face with a possum in my muscadines. Freaked me out. I almost grabbed him reaching for fruit. Late night couldn’t use anything but my bb gun. One shot and down for the count. Unfortunately it looks like he wiped out a good amount of my crop though.

By the leg otherwise yes. After removing many living n some dead from netting it doesn’t bother me so much i guess.

What do you do with your muscadines?
Most of the people in my area just let the birds have them ,

Snack on them, but most get juiced for jelly or ice cream.

I think the region you live in and maybe the variety that is common has a lot to do with it. Most of our muscadines are not sweet enough directly off the vine. You can make decent jelly out of them. Commercially they make muscadine wine and really that is the best use for them locally .

:flushed: How do you ‘dispense’ of them, Tippy? Without getting sprayed?

Skunks? I just open a Havaheart trap and let them go. The trick is to walk to the trap without a trapped skunk seeing you. Lift latches on one or both ends, carefully tip the trap to its side and lift a flap of one end to create an opening for skunk to walk out.

Once I do that, I step away to keep a distance. In the past, I carry a green tarp in front of me so a skunk could not see me (my legs) and covered the trap with a tarp before turning the trap on its side.

The trick is to not let a trapped skunk see you coming, tarp or no tarp.
